Show me your friends & I'll show you your future...

Before we jump into today’s newsletter, for those interested in learning or expanding their Facebook ads knowledge for local businesses, my Facebook Lead Generation Blueprint drops on the 29th of September.

Anyway,

Have you heard that quote, show me your friends and I’ll show you your future?

I’ve never fully agreed with that…

I have some great lifelong friends that quite frankly could not care less about being an entrepreneur, building a business, making money online or living the daily uncertainty of being ‘self-employed’ (although i’d argue working full time is much riskier, but thats for another day).

Regardless just because they don’t have the same ambitions as me, it doesnt mean that they’re holding me back or that the group i hang around with dictate my future.

These are friends from a young age and will most likely be friends for the rest of my life.

But me on the other hand, I guess im on a different path than them…

Striving daily to escape the usual 9to5 job, mortgage on a house, wife, two kids, financed car and a holiday per year…

Nothing wrong with that and i know MANY people in the world wish for that.

But I just want more.

I spoke about this recently on a TikTok where my current main goal is to pay off my dad’s mortgage which I will do in the next couple of years.

Chances are, if you’re reading this you have a similar mindset. Whatever your goals are.

The bottom line is you have access to the internet and you’re reading this newsletter, which tells me that at one point or another you’ve stumbled across my content and that you’re striving for a better life.

It’s not about your friends (not fully anyway), it’s about your environment…

Let me explain…

To me your environment is compiled by a few things:

Your immediate surroundings

Your physical environment that you work from every day is crucial. I’ll be honest here, sometimes I get super busy and caught up in the work that my environment gets messy.

It’s not just a messy environment but it massively impacts my way of thinking and quite frankly clouds my brain. It’s difficult to explain but if you’re working from home and haven’t got a clean environment around you, go and tidy it and you’ll see for yourself.

Your immediate surroundings is what fuels your focus and creativity.

If you’re working in a messy surrounding you’re not going to produce your best quality work.

The content you consume

We spend A LOT of time on our phones. Likely scrolling social media, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and so on… What you consume on there dictates the way you think and view the world, what you believe, what mindset you have and quite frankly what you do.

I have a simple social media formula > I follow people that teach me, educate me, that I look up to or that I know and communicate with.

I don’t follow people that engage in drama, I don’t follow meme pages or useless shit that doesn’t add to my life in a positive way.

I encourage you to look through your following and ask yourself - does this person teach or educate me, am i inspired by this person or do i know them on a personal level.

If answer is no to any of them = remove them or at least restrict.

You dont have to cater your feed to literally be millionaires and people doing better than you and that’s it, it swings the scale too far in the other direction where it can be quite daunting opening social media and seeing everyone doing stuff vs you just consuming in that moment.

Goes back to the whole show me your friends and i’ll show you your future… You don’t spend 24/7 with your friends, you could have friends who love binge-watching Netflix on a weekend, but if you’re choosing to consume content about personal growth, entrepreneurship, self development you’ll stay on your path regardless of what your friends are doing - likelihood is though that you’ll quickly outgrow your friends and become distanced. Which isn’t a bad thing as long as there’s no judgement on what they want to do with their life vs what you want to do with yours.

It’s about keeping a distance and not indulging in the shit that takes you away from your path too often - I guess that’s what they call ‘balance’. But remember to still spend time with friends regardless of their ambitions in life.

Your social circle

Even though you may not surround yourself daily with other entrepreneurs, you can still expand your social circle online.

Joining communities where people share your ambitions ensures that you're not isolated in your journey. I know how lonely it can be doing what we do whether its SMMA or any other online business. You’re behind a screen and a lot of us dont have teams to communicate with or even people to speak to, so i’d encourage anyone to join communities with likeminded people whenever you find one, EVEN if they’re paid. I’ve got a community for agency owners launching back end of this month (fingers crossed) which i’ll hopefully see some of you in there!

You don’t need to replace your old friends, but you can add to your social circle by finding people who "get it"—who understand the entrepreneurial mindset, the hustle, and the freedom you're chasing. The conversations you have are different. A simple conversation with someone that’s in the same game as you can teach you infinitely, you bounce ideas off each other, teach each other and it’s super refreshing to see someone else’s perspective on things you’re doing or building.

Where you live

Something that i’ve been pondering on for over the past year.

If you dont know i live in a small town in the North-West of England and quite frankly I need to move, but the question is where? Bigger city? London? Manchester? Move countries? Countless questions to make the right decision.

I understand that where you live has a profound impact on not only your progress but your state of mind. If you live in a small town, the small town way of thinking will be in your head. You’ll not want to post on socials because people you know will see you in person and laugh or question it or talk about you. You’ll not have many likeminded individuals that share similar ambitions to network with and so on.

Moving to a different environment where there’s more people opens you up to more opportunities and shows you that you’re really a small fish in the ocean. You move to an environment that nobody knows who you are, you act like your true self. You don’t care what others think or say, you don’t look or listen to others opinions and you genuinely become yourself.

Live in a place that promotes creativity, efficiency and inspires you.

If you live in an environment that is stressful or filled with distractions, it’s harder to stay consistent and motivated.

A city can be great for networking, opportunities and motivation, but it can also be distracting from your goals, so choose wisely.

Show me your friends and i’ll show you your future, should be show me your envrionment and i’ll show you your future.

It’s not about cutting ties with friends who don’t share your ambitions.

It’s about ensuring that the environment you build around you—from your workspace to the content you consume—supports your journey and where you want to be.

You can remain close to friends who live more traditional lives or haven’t got the same ambitions as you while also surrounding yourself with people, content, and spaces that fuel your entrepreneurial drive.

Cheers for reading
